GY on ExComm

Gifted Youth may not serve on any local group’s executive committee (ExComm), BUT they may serve as an appointed volunteer in a non-voting role to support a local group.

While Gifted Youth may not serve on any local group’s executive committee (ExComm), they may hold an appointed, non-voting role to support a local group which is still a fantastic way to earn volunteer hours to apply for the Mensa Honor Society and is also a great addition to your local group as Mensa’s GY have incredible ingenuity and enthusiasm that can elevate your group to the next level.

Some ideas:

  • Helping your local group’s social media
  • Assisting or shadowing an existing ExComm member
  • Helping to plan family-friendly events that other gifted youth and members with children might be interested in attending

Contact either me (the GYC) or your local secretary about your interest in volunteering with your local group.

Local Secretary

  1. Contact me (GYC) to let me know about their interest.
  2. I’ll setup a time for us to talk to the GY and their parent about their participation, goals, interests, etc.
  3. Once committed, the parents a permission slip for them to fill out where they give permission for him to participate as {role} for {local_group}‘s excom

GY Volunteer Communication Guidelines

  • Any correspondence with the GY MUST have the parent (or myself) cc’ed. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • GY email addresses MUST be bcc’ed on all email correspondence to safeguard email addresses. Do not share the email address of the GY to anyone who has not passed Mensa’s background check without the express, written permission of the GY’s parent or guardian.
  • Email all officers and volunteers that you have a GY volunteer and let them know about the rules of engagement, linking them to this page or the GY Handbook on us.mensa.org. 
  • Remind the GY to include their parent on their correspondence with any non-background checked adult.
  • While any event the GY should host is not part of the GYP, events should still adhere to the event safety guidelines from this page.
